Vick to Admit Guilt in Dogfighting

Michael Vick agreed Monday to plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, a deal that leaves the Atlanta Falcons quarterback facing up to 18 months in prison and puts his NFL career in jeopardy. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend Vick be sentenced to between a year and 18 months in prison, according to a government official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the terms have not yet been made final.

Our country is in need of a spiritual transformation. Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important.

Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories.

And yes, some of what an earlier poster said is true. We should be concerned about people AND animals. It is not an either/or. Becoming kinder and more thoughtful across the board is something we should all be thinking about.

There are many activities which are perfectly legal in the United States that are harmful, cruel and even deadly to animals. From horse racing to medical research to cosmetic testing to hunting and fishing, animals are routinely injured or killed in the pursuit of sport, entertainment, gambling, pleasure, medicine, and beauty with no repercussion from the law.

Minks are slaughtered to make fur coats for wealthy women. Queen Elizabeth attended the Kentucky Derby despite the fact that horses are whipped in the hope that they will run faster and are commonly "put down" after being injured while racing. The vice-president of the United States was driven around in an armoured limousine so he could take pop-shots at defenseless birds (and elderly men). Why then, is the United States government ruining one man's life because he engaged in dog fighting? Is dog fighting less cruel than shooting defenseless birds in the pursuit of "sport?"

Fact of the matter is that, either cruelty to all animals should be illegal or there should be no laws against it at all. There should never be a two-teared justice system, where some acts are legal only because they are done by members of higher social status, while acts of the same logical consistency are illegal because they are thought to be committed by people of lower social status, in this case, minorities and rural southerners.

This relatively innocuous post attracted a variety of responses. Thanks for reading!

Its very unfair to presume that those of us that fight against cruelty to animals have not fought just as hard against this war, against racism, against corporate greed, against neoliberalism, free trade and American foreign policy. Vick defenders keep using every terrible incident they can come up with, from abortion to wars to murderers that have been set free as a comparison that might excuse vicks behavior. They make these either/or arguments to that make ill informed assumptions. If I care about animal cruelty, then I cant care about muslims or illegal hunting practices or someone getting away with murder or rape? Is that the argument? Or because soldiers who are involved in this corrupt war engage in disgusting torture tactics does that mean that we should excuse any other crimes that do not equate?
This guy made enough money and had the power to make a real difference in many communities, a good difference. He couldn’t find anything more enjoyable than to prepare, organize, provide training and funding for the unnecessary sadistic torture, maiming and killing of innocent animals? Really? He was willing to sacrifice everything he has worked for his entire life in order to sate his appetite for the bloody, brutal, cruel and vicious exploitation of innocent animals that depended on him for survival. What a hero huh? And in case you weren’t aware of it, most sociopaths that engage in sadistic attacks on humans begin by desensitizing themselves by torturing animals.

let me tell everyone something.this guy vick is no football player, in my eyes he's a dam looser.just as all the rest of these nuts that have to make their money out of the terrible abuse and the force of fighting and killing of these poor innocent dogs.how low can someone get?and this guy is on a football team? please i hope the hell this man is kicked off the team for good.this guy did so wrong, and he'll do it again.how can you even sit there and watch animals rip each other apart? you are not normal.that is sick. how can you people not have any feeling? what would you do? and how would you feel if you were made to get in a ring and fight like that and get ripped apart? and then killed because you didn't perform well?
this vick should rot in jail for what he did and will do again,he don't deserve to live either as all the rest of these wacos, and whoever can sit there and watch.

the problam right here with the fighting, torturing and killing these dogs is not enough is being done about it. everyone is buisy with their lives, you have the war and everyhing else, and no one thinks that these kind of things are going on. at least i used to hear a little bit about it, but i really never thought about it,and the pain and suffering all these dogs have to go through at the hands of heartless, cruel inhumane people, who have to hide behind innocent defenceless creatures of god, who has every right live.imagine making these already tortured dogs, mate so theres more to torture and kill. lets make these people suffer the same way, instead of a slap on the hand. lets find them and even underground, where alot of this sick nonsence is going on, lets care about these animals. if these people have to go through the pain and suffering that these dogs did and do, this would stop.
