Nagin Hires Spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Just when you think Ray Nagin can't get any nuttier, he goes and hires an Indian spiritual guru to heal the City's problems. His holiness' name is Ravi Shankar, but he prefers to be called Sri Sri, which is apparently some term of respect among leaders of this sort. Reminds me of "the Maestro" on Seinfeld, only this isn't a sitcom, this is our actual Mayor throwing taxpayer money down the toilet.

Sri Sri Ravi's central message is that humans are like bananas, nourished by spiritual values common to all world religions and most individual spiritual paths, while the symbols and practices of these religions are like the banana's skin. I am not making this up. His aim is to foster a secularized, humanized, non-exclusive spirituality that will help people recognize the good in every human being.

Perhaps if things don't work out with his holiness Sri Sri, Nagin can ask the Church of Scientology to help us out. God help us all.

Sri Sri is first class master - So you should understand Him better if you took time out to understand the first class work and top class words of wisdom He has offered and is doing round the globe.

Thanks for the comment, anonymous. Perhaps I'm being too hard on Sri Sri, but regardless of whether he's legitimate or a con man, either way I don't think this is an appropriate use of City resources.

before you make any judgement, please do a complete research and also in this case, take time to attend the basic course in art of living. YOu may not know this, but Guruji was INVITED by none other than the prime minister of Iraq last month recognizing his contricbution to bring peace and normal life back to the people who have been traumatized by the war (both old and young)! Also you did misquote Guruji, he never compared human being to banana...

words are inexpesive indeed...

Thanks, anonymous, but I'll pass on the course in Art of Living. My point is that I don't think our Mayor should be wasting City resources on Mr. Shankar or any other spiritual guru, regardless of whether or not some people claim the guru is legitimate. I stand by my reporting of Sri Sri Ravi comparing people to bananas -- google Sri Sri Ravi and banana and see how many times he is quoted on this.

Googled as per your advice and found the correct quote which reads: "Religion is like the banana peel and Spirituality is like the banana."

My post is accurate, but thanks for the comment, correction.

How do you know for sure that it is a waste of resources of the city without finding out first hand what added value is obtained through the Art of Living courses on stress reduction and trauma relief.....is is not better to keep an open mind at least????

Thanks, anonymous, but I don't think the City should be spending taxpayer money for any spiritual guru, so my comment would be the same whether it's his holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar or some other guru.

Well anonymous, our dear friend seem to be Programmed to parrot that " I dont believe wasting city resources ... ... bla bla bla " indefinitely. ,irrespective of what you say :)

If you say nola is a waste on the face of this earth, still he will continue blabbering the same!

Forget it...

Ravishankar is a thief.

He has stolen 10 acres of public land
belonging to Karnataka state govt.
He is an encroacher. Unless he
gives up the govt. land, he will be a
thief.

This is to the Anonymous who was complaining about land grabbing. Looks like you have been holding the issue inside for long time. Can someone grab land from state government?? Probably it only happens in Karnataka. By the way suggest your government to file a case in the state High Court on this issue.

It amazes me that I still receive comments on this post about Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The post is almost a year old now. Thanks for continuing to read and comment here.

Hi Nola,
Of late, I'm trying to find out more about AoL, Isha Foundation and the like and will be documenting the posts at my blog. Can you comment on the outcome of Ravi being hired by your mayor? Do you know how much money was spent and what benefits were reaped?
Thanks, ~Madhu.

Thanks, Madhu. I haven't heard anything about this for a long time. I assume it was simply another goofy idea the Mayor floated and then never followed up on.
